Asma bronquial en el anciano

Resumen


El asma en los mayores de 65 años tiene una elevada prevalencia. Además, estos pacientes presentan una alta morbimortalidad, una peor calidad de vida y un peor control, generando con todo ello un alto consumo de recursos sanitarios. Estas características son debidas posiblemente a que la enfermedad es más difícil de diagnosticar en el anciano,  se asocia a  múltiples comorbilidades y el manejo terapéutico es más complicado. En esta población anciana nos encontramos con 2 fenotipos diferentes: el asma que se inicia en la infancia y persiste en la edad adulta y el asma que se inicia ya en el adulto.  Las características distintivas entre ambos grupos y su pronóstico no están perfectamente definidos. En esta revisión analizaremos las características del asma del anciano para poder establecer un adecuado diagnóstico de la enfermedad lo más precozmente posible y facilitar el tratamiento más idóneo a cada paciente
